The daughter of the acclaimed playwright Sharman MacDonald, she originally envisaged a career for herself on stage. “When I was young and starting out as an actress, it wasn’t film I thought of – it was always theatre,” Knightley added

Keira Knightley goes fierce on the cover of Interview‘s April issue. Here’s what the 27-year-old actress had to share with her A Dangerous Method director, David Cronenberg:
On choosing roles: “If I had to make a choice, it would be to do the performance-based pieces, which, generally speaking, are the less technical pieces. When you’re working in a space where it’s really about the technical side of it, then it’s even harder to maintain a performance because you have todo things so many times from so many different angles. It’s actually something that I would like to figure out. I’m quite interested to see whether you could maintain a high-energy performance in that kind of technical arena.”
On Seeking a Friend for the End of the World with Steve Carrell: “He has this amazing ability to be incredibly funny but have that pathos at the same time – sort of that crying-clown thing. The movie itself has comic moments, but it’s about the end of the world, so obviously it has an apocalyptic feel to it that’s not that comic, because everybody dies … Other than that, though, it’s hilarious.

Keira Knightley has revealed that she is enjoying filming her new movie Anna Karenina and is excited to be juggling all the ideas about her character. The movie sees her reunite with director Joe Wright, with whom she worked on Pride and Prejudice and Atonement, for an adaptation of the Leo Tolstoy. And the actress admits that she saw different sides of Tolstoy’s writing and the character when she has returned to the novel as an older reader. Speaking to Interview magazine the actress said: “It’s very exciting. We’re right in the middle of it. It’s totally different than this; it’s a very, very stylised version of it, and she’s a tricky character. “I remember reading it as a teenager and just seeing the romance of it. Then all of a sudden I read it over the summer, and thought, ‘Wow. Sometimes Tolstoy actually hates her quite a lot. Is she the heroine or the anti-heroine?’ “It’s an interesting thing, with all of us, we’re sort of grappling with those ideas. You don’t want to simplify anything, because it should be an exploration of somebody who breaks their own moral code, and what happens when you break your own moral code. It’s really interesting, and fingers crossed it will work.” Knightley leads an all star cast in Anna Karenina that includes Jude Law, Matthew Macfadyen, Aaron Johnson and Kelly Macdonald. Anna Karenina is released 7th September.

Keira Knightley refused to rewatch previous adaptations of Anna Karenina prior to filming the latest big screen take on Leo Tolstoy’s epic novel over fears she’d accidentally copy other actresses’ performances. The Pirates of the Caribbean star reteamed with her Atonement director Joe Wright for the literary masterpiece, with Knightley playing Karenina, a married woman who has an affair with a soldier. Greta Garbo and Helen MCCrory have previously played the part – but Knightley was keen not to pay close attention to their scenes. She tells Interview magazine, “I saw a couple of versions ages ago. I’ve seen the one that was on TV in England with Helen MCCrory playing Anna, and she’s wonderful. “I also saw the Greta Garbo version, but years and years ago. I didn’t want to see it again just before I played the part because I thought if I did something similar that I would want it to be an accident, not because I’ve nicked (stolen) it.”
