Posted by admin on August 7th, 2010 under Alerts, Movie News

Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield are to open the 54th BFI London Film Festival with their film “Never Let Me Go”, it was announced. The young British actors who have become Hollywood stars will attend the European premiere of the dark drama, which will mark the opening gala of the London’s 2010 film festival on October 13. Directed by One Hour Photo’s Mark Romanek the film is based on the highly acclaimed, best-selling novel by Kazuo Ishiguro and adapted for the screen by British author and screenwriter Alex Garland. Oscar nominees Knightley and Mulligan and Garfield – who has just been unveiled as the new Spider-Man – star as friends who grew up together at an idyllic English boarding school. While at school the trio discover a dark secret about their future, and are then forced to come to grips with their sheltered past as adults in the real world, while confronting the deep feelings of love, jealousy and betrayal that threaten to pull them apart. Sandra Hebron, the Festival’s Artistic Director said: “It is a great pleasure to be able to open the festival with a film as accomplished and imaginative as “Never Let Me Go”. It combines impeccable filmmaking, outstanding performances and a deeply moving story, and I couldn’t wish for a stronger or more appropriate opening night.” Romanek said: “I think I can speak for the entire cast and crew when I say that we are deeply honoured and excited to have been selected to open this year’s festival. For me personally, it seems the perfect way to celebrate the conclusion of an incredible filmmaking experience in the UK.” “Never Let Me Go” is due to be released in the UK on January 14 2011. The full programme for The 54th BFI London Film Festival will be announced on September 8. The festival runs from October 13-28.

The Duchess to premiere at Toronto film festival

Posted by admin on July 16th, 2008 under Alerts, Gallery Additions

Keira Knightley’s latest bid to win an Oscar will get under way in the autumn after it emerged last night that The Duchess has secured a premiere at the Toronto international film festival in September. Knightley plays the 18th century noblewoman Lady Georgina Spencer, the Duchess of Devonshire, a spirited figure renowned for her strident political views and devotion to the cause of women’s suffrage. The Duchess’ unfortunate marriage to the Duke, portrayed in the film by Ralph Fiennes, threatened to boil over into public scandal after she was forced to endure her husband’s long affair with her best friend. The picture is being positioned as an early awards season contender and could earn Knightley her second Oscar nomination following one for Pride & Prejudice in 2006. A widely predicted second nomination for her role as the star-crossed lover Cecilia Tallis in Atonement failed to materialise earlier this year. If things don’t go as planned and the Richmond-born actress fails to garner attention for The Duchess, she can always hope that her performance as Dylan Thomas’ lover Vera Phillips in The Edge of Love does the job. Beyond that, Knightley has been cast as Cordelia in a big screen treatment of King Lear opposite Anthony Hopkins, Gwyneth Paltrow and Naomi Watts.
