Oscar-nominated costumes worn by Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes will be on show in exhibitions at Chatsworth House and Kedleston Hall. The outfits were worn by the stars in last year’s hit movie, The Duchess, with scenes being filmed at the two Derbyshire stately homes. The film has been nominated for two Academy Awards – for Best Costumes and Best Art Direction – at this year’s ceremony, to be held in Hollywood on February 22. Now Chatsworth House will be adding the wedding dresses worn by Keira Knightley, in the film’s marriage scenes, to their collection of artefacts from The Duchess. And Kedleston Hall has 12 new costumes to add to its display. The movie, which cost £13.5m, tells the story of the life of 18th-century aristocrat Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, who was known for her extravagant political and personal life.Along with the costumes, the Chatsworth exhibition also has a collection of information and portraits of the real Georgiana. Clips from the movie, released on DVD on March 16, will also be played at the Chatsworth exhibition, including a piece on the making of the film and an interview with Amanda Foreman, author of Georgiana, a biography of the Duchess, and a consultant on the film. Simon Seligman, Chatsworth’s head of communications, said he hoped the new exhibition would be an attractive option for cash-strapped tourists. He said: “With the outlook for the UK economy so uncertain this year, it’s clear that people will be looking for excellent value for money and choosing their destinations for days out and short breaks with great care. “We believe Chatsworth’s TV & Film exhibition has a popular appeal alongside our many other attractions to ensure that people will want to come and share this special place. “It’s also a great time for visitors from overseas to take advantage of the weak pound to come and visit.” He said that the film had been a major boost for the stately home. She said: “Filming of The Duchess has brought immense pleasure to everyone at Chatsworth. “It has impacted not only on Chatsworth but on the region as a whole, once again confirming Derbyshire as a beautiful, historical and glamorous location.” Victoria Flanagan, property manager at Kedleston Hall, said the film had increased tourist numbers. She said: “We have had costumes from the film on display and last season they were a real draw. The release of the film proved to be a real hit for us as people flocked to see the place where the film was made.” She said Kedleston Hall now has a further 12 costumes from The Duchess, which will arrive for the start of the new season. She said: “We will display them in the rooms in which they were seen in the film and there will also be a behind-the-scenes exhibition.” The Kedleston Hall exhibition opens on February 28, while the Chatsworth display opens on March 11.
